Badminton is a very enjoyable sport. To play badminton, you
must run fast with proper stride. Along with stride, proper flexibility of your
arms and wrists is necessary. Wrist involvement is so high in badminton that it
can give you a huge advantage in winning a game. A proper grip on a racquet
helps the wrist move as needed. Otherwise, the wrist will not move accordingly.
There are some grip techniques used in the game from basic to pro level. Here
we discuss that.
Basics of
Gripping:
The following points will elaborate on the basic gripping techniques that everyone should know
- Each racket has a gripping position and is octagonal. you need to know about it. The sides of the handles are called bevels.
- Do not hold the racket’s handle in your palm. Always use your fingers to hold it.
- Hold your racket so that the end of the handle rests in the palm of your hand.
- Never hold your racket tightly. Otherwise, you cannot change your grip on time.
- You have five fingers in your hand. Control racket with three fingers Middle, Index and Thumb. Use the rest fingers to hold the weight of the racket.
- Remember point number 4. It is so important to inform yourself because it is common that almost every beginner unknowingly wants to grip the handle tightly after playing a few matches.

Grip Techniques:
Forehand
Grip:
Forehand grip is like handshaking with a person. Most of the
shots are played with this grip. So, Badminton players should master this to
improve their gameplay.
To achieve the forehand grip, your thumb and index finger
should form a 'V' shape on the handle. Whereas the junction or lower point of V
should align with the racket’s head. Keep the grip loose so you would be able
to move your wrist properly.
Used for:
1.
Forehand drives
2.
Forehand Smashes
3.
Forehand drops
4.
Forehand clears
5.
Forehand net shots
6.
Forehand lifting
Backhand
Grip:
Backhand grip learning is critically important. A right-handed
player’s left side and a left-handed player’s right side would be his or her
first weakness. So, every player should practice erasing their weak point.
To achieve the backhand grip, you should place your thumb
on the grip’s top section. Whereas the strings
of the racket would face the ground. Rest fingers should place like the image.
Used for:
1.
Backhand drives
2.
Backhand Smashes
3.
Backhand drops
4.
Backhand clears
5.
Backhand net shots
6.
Backhand lifting
Smash
Grip:
To smash a shuttlecock with maximum power and effectiveness,
a forehand grip is not enough. Every player should focus on a smash grip after
mastering the backhand and forehand grip.
But it is not so hard to achieve this grip. There is a
simple difference between forehand and Backhand grip. The difference between
the forehand grip and the backhand grip is that during the forehand grip, the face
of the racket is vertical to the ground but during the smash grip face of the
racket will be slightly angled like in the image. Through this grip, you can
smash the shuttlecock with the flat face of the racket with more power.
